Network Settings

Windows XP wants to kill you. Delay the inevitable with this XP command-line way to look up the network settings.

ipconfig/all

Setting up Debbie's Toshiba to be a Wireless Network

  1. make sure the on/off switch for the toshiba wireless card is ON. left side, back. orange light lights up
  2. bring up network connections winder from the control panel
  3. local area connection -> properties -> advanced (this is the connection to the cable internet)
  4. select the radio button to share this network
  5. go start > run > cmd
  6. ipconfig/all
  7. note the DNS numbers
  8. back in the network connections window on the toshiba
  9. wireless network connection > tcpip > properties
  10. make sure IP is set to 192.168.0.1 & subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. seems to be OK to leave "gateway" blank. may need to fill in the DNS numbers
  11. "OK" out of all the windows network windows down to the "network connections" window
  12. on your mac, click on your airport reception icon in the upper right
  13. select "create network", give it a name
  14. give windows a minute or three - it may connect automatically. if it doesn't, right click the "wireless network connection" icon > view available wireless networks. your network should show up. select & click "connect"
  15. should pretty much magically work now. double check the windows settings as above & also double check the mac network settings by going system prefs > network > airport > tcp/ip . "using DHCP" should be selected & it should have a 192.168.0.X IP & the same subnet as winders and 192.168.0.1 as "router". if nothing is showing for DNS & you get nothing in a web browser, type in the DNS numbers you got from the ipconfig/all in winderz
  16. relax, smile, have a beer!

Shutdown / Reboot

When using Microsoft Remote Desktop they don't give you the option to shutdown or reboot from the start menu. That doesn't mean you won't need to do it!

go start and select run
type taskmgr
go shutdown, and then either shutdown or restart
